As part of June 25, 2019 meetings that focused on Unity and Understanding for First Nation Water and Wastewater Utilities, a member of the team shared a spiritual moment to help enable partnerships.

A tradition Dr. Venkatesh Meda (U of S, Global Institute for Water Security) shared with the group was to  release fresh coconuts into the watershed.  The coconuts had travelled more than 10,000 km (from India) and carried emotional and sacred spirit for the betterment of people and Society.

Dr. Meda shared his personal feelings, value and importance of the ‘whole coconut tree’ to the environment and water, in particular, absorbing all energies and renewing the bonding with the greatest force in order to protect and form friendships and partnerships. The symbolic practice of a goodwill commodity which is very precious, brings positive new beginnings and releases negative energies from our physical-spiritual practices; all factors account for this water-energy moment’.

With the First Nations people we view water as a sacred gift as well because of the life sustenance it provides to people, plants and animals.  We also use water in our sacred ceremonies and the cree word for water is ‘nipi’.  First Nations view all forms of life and living things to have a spirit and our prayers reflect the spiritual aspect of the respect we show for all forms of life.
